The Antifungal Potential of Cardamom-based Denteez Mouthwash Against Opportunistic Fungal Infections in the Oral Cavity

This study evaluated the antifungal activity of Denteez™ mouthwash, a cardamom-based herbal formulation, against multiple Candida species causing oral candidiasis. It was tested on five standard Candida species and 54 clinical isolates, many of which showed resistance to commonly used antifungal drugs like fluconazole. Denteez™ demonstrated strong antifungal activity, inhibiting 98.2% of the isolates with a MIC of 1.25% and showed time-dependent fungal suppression. These findings suggest that Denteez™ may serve as an effective herbal alternative in managing oral candidiasis, especially in cases with rising drug resistance.

Antibacterial, Anti-inflammatory properties and Therapeutic Benefits of Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)

This study demonstrates that both fruit and seed extracts of Elettaria cardamomum, rich in volatile compounds, possess potent antibacterial activity against key periodontal pathogens such as P. gingivalis, F. nucleatum, and A. actinomycetemcomitans, with low MIC and MBC values. The extracts disrupted bacterial cell membranes, inhibited biofilm formation, and significantly reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-8) in macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide. The anti-inflammatory effects were linked to the inhibition of the NF-κB signaling pathway. These findings support the potential of cardamom extracts as natural therapeutic agents for managing periodontal infections.

Evaluation of Antibacterial Effect of Aqueous-Alcoholic Elettaria Cardamomum Herbal Extract on Aggregatibacter Actinomycetemcomitans.

This study evaluated the antimicrobial effect of hydroalcoholic extract of Elettaria cardamomum against Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), a key pathogen in periodontitis. Using agar-well diffusion and broth microdilution methods, the extract showed clear antibacterial activity with inhibition zones of 20.0–20.5 mm at 25% and 50% concentrations. The MIC and MBC values were 0.0039 mg/ml, indicating potent efficacy, though slightly less than chlorhexidine. The findings suggest that cardamom extract could be a promising natural alternative to chlorhexidine in oral care formulations.
